Why hydrangeas lose color

I'll make adjustments If you didn't know about the Ph of the blocks making a difference how did you expect the new neighbors to know? Just want to be mad or blame others. Hydrangeas I have had for years in all variety of color it depends on how much acid and some root tone you add to it although my mom gets beautiful ones by adding coffee grounds and banana peels and egg shells to hers all the time!

This won't fix the problem, but it may help in the short run. I have a friend who bought that transparent dried flower spray paint that's made especially for dried flowers for florists. You can find it at most craft stores.

After her hydrangeas had died and started to lose their color, she sprayed the flowers with a med color of blue and a just a hint of purple. Advertisement She did this by making a mask with a paper plate with a slit and a hole cut in it to avoid spraying the coloring on the leaves.

This may sound a bit tacky, but I'll tell you this, she had the most amazing and real looking hydrangeas with wonderful color that lasted well through the fall! Thanks to all of you. Now I feel like it was not my fault.

I also learned that they will not bloom if cut back in fall. You can change the color by, adding acid. I got this out of the, bhg magazine.

It said you do not have to buy colored ones, to get color. Advertisement It said to add acid type things, to change the color. It has worked for me. Hydrangea colors can be changed by adding white vinegar to the soil for a brighter color but this depends on the acidity of your soil. Like Beth from MA said, they will eventually fade after being on the bush for the season. But they make good dried flowers and they are bigger also. I think you have to leave them on the bush or the stem will dry too thin to support the flower part.

Have you tried giving them food coloring in their water? I have never heard of this happening with hydrangeas, but aren't you supposed to be able to to do this with shasta daisies? It has to do with the PH level in the ground. I have a neighbor who adds lime for pink and rhododendrun fertilizer for blue. She says you use handfuls and place it a few inches from the roots and scratch it in to the soil.

Hope this helps. It could be the breed of the hydrangea. There are berrds that flower green. My mother bought me a blue hydrangea almost 10 years ago, and for many years I have gotten beautiful blue blooms from it. The first year it didn't bloom, which I expected. What I didn't expect is what I have gotten the last 2 years. It has blue, purple, and pink blooms! I don't know how it happened, but it did. I received a hydrangea several years ago and planted it in an area that had partial sun to partial shade.

It never bloomed there and seemed to struggle. Last spring I moved it and it did better and became fuller but still no blooms. This year it is coming out with green plumage but no hint of a bloom yet. I live in Zone 6a and I've seen so many people with beautiful pink and blue hydrangea's, I actually have a different white one that blooms every year, but this blue hydrangea is giving me a time and definitely making me scratch my head.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I accidently sprayed week killer on my plants instead of bug killer. Did not realize it until the next day when all the leaves was brown and wilted. So sad, I cut it back and washed it off the got 2 days of rain.. So sad! It would be good if this article talked about how bad aluminum sulfate is for the environment!

As with humans, when it is mixed with water, aluminum sulfate will burn plants and animals. I purchased a Hydrangia bush from Home Depot. It was in a plastic pot so I just transferred it to a much larger pot. The soil I used was also purchased at Home Depot. It was potting soil. However, now, all the beautiful round flowers have lost their color and look faded. I had this same issue last year and purchased what I was told was needed to bring the color back.

I mixed the stuff with water and it was a messy task. The colors changed very little. Join as a Pro. Houzz TV. Houzz Research. Shop Featured Holiday Categories. Home Decor. Holiday Decor. I painted my walls yellow but now wish it was a different color Q. On the yellow topic, though i realize its been painted over now, we took the lemon sorbet and mixed with its lighter cousin lightening white. The sorbet was just too strong full strength. We love it. Some friends say they like it. Others bite their tongues and say nothing.

Yellow is tough!
